This study examined the effectiveness of peer-mediated individualized peer play using motivation strategies of pivotal response treatment(PRT) on peer interaction of children with autism spectrum disorder(ASD). A multiple probe design was used across three children with ASD under five experimental conditions: baseline, intervention, generalization across situations, generalization across peers, and maintenance. The intervention consisted of peer education and feedback and data was collected during recess and lunch. The findings suggest that the intervention was effective and efficient in improving peer interaction of children with ASD. In addition, the effects of the intervention were generalized to a novel play setting and uneducated peers and maintained 9-11 weeks after the intervention was concluded. By minimizing the role of adults during peer play, this study demonstrates the full potential of peer-mediated PRT, which enhanced the peer interaction of children with ASD.
